This is a ration shop. After the revolution all Cubans had a ration at no cost (including cigars) which filled all their needs. Every time the ration books are replaced there is something else not on it but the basics are still there, salt. flour, bread, oil, vinegar, rice etc. no longer free but extremely low cost. Cubans are not starving but their diet is very limited and the food in the hotels is specially imported and not available to locals. Cubans are not even allowed to stay in some of the hotels but others have Cubans who have got married or have been given the holiday as a reward for good work side by side with westerners (by the way, cigars were removed from the ration quite early on except for those born before the revolution who were promised and therefore still entitled)! Posted by Picasa
