The 30 feet of lava that sits on top of Herculaneum - in 1750 picks were the only way of removing the rock and when Pompei was discovered 30 years later everyone downed tools and went over there, as all they had to do was sweep away the ash.
P.S. Note the schoolchildren above - the site was swarming with them but they were well behaved and feigned interest admirably.
