Pinar del Rio - an interesting landscape of limestone outcrops. The town though is the butt of Cuban ridicule. 'Only in Pinar del Rio' they say, 'is the emergency department of the hospital on the second floor with no elevator! Only there would they consider it a good idea to put a disco on top of a funeral parlour! When we read in the paper that a fire station had burned down we knew it would be in Pinar del Rio and it was! And what a laugh we had when we discovered that they had finished building the local cinema but couldn't get the cement mixer out and had to knock a wall down!'
